Cultural Coalition: The Challenges of Dual Identity

In an increasingly globalized world, the challenges surrounding cultural coalition reflect how individuals and communities often feel stuck between cultural traditions and modern-day trends. Dual identity refers to the coexistence of two different cultural identities within an individual, often resulting from immigration and multicultural societies. This dual identity provides both opportunities and challenges as individuals struggle to balance trends and tradition.

Normalisation of imbalance 

As a British-Pakistani woman who grew up in London, finding the balance between cultural traditions and fitting into the society around me was extremely difficult. This led to what I often refer to as the normalization of imbalance. This occurs when individuals become accustomed to lingering feelings of confusion regarding their cultural identity, making it the norm.

Cultural Tradition vs Influence of Trends

Older generations tend to hold onto their traditions, while younger generations lean towards modern-day trends. Tradition is a pivotal factor that connects individuals to their community and heritage, providing a foundation for growth. In contrast, the rise of media influence and communication has exposed individuals to diverse cultural influences, evolving the concept of cultural identity. Traditional elements create a sense of shared cultural experiences, while modern trends have fostered innovative cultural expressions and contemporary art, forming a hybrid identity.

Growing up, this hybrid was unclear and remains unique to each person's experiences. For example, I grew up in East London, where culture and tradition were integral to my life, but modern trends influenced my self-perception and the importance of tradition. Despite finding beauty in my culture, my food was labelled as smelly, my oiled hair was seen as dirty, and my henna was viewed as staining. A decade later, during the age of Bridgerton, where the main lead was South Asian and cultural elements like jhumkas and slicked-back hairstyles became trendy, I realized the influence of modern trends and the importance of finding a cultural coalition.

How Young People Are Shaping Perception

Navigating dual identity can be challenging but offers a fresh perspective that bridges cultural divides. Young people's political activism has created formidable changes in the political landscape. With increasing youth participation in voting and politics, their input is becoming a significant factor. Many young individuals are involved in activism, advocating for a range of issues. For instance, during the 2019 General Election, constituencies with large Pakistani populations saw higher engagement due to youth-led community mobilization efforts.

Additionally, more ethnic minorities are standing for and being elected to public office. Groups like the National Union of Students and organizations such as Citizens UK have seen active participation from youth leading campaigns on affordable housing and anti-racism initiatives. Youth activism has highlighted issues directly affecting ethnic minority communities, such as immigration policies, economic opportunities, and discrimination. The increasing political and social engagement of ethnic minority youth holds great promise for the future. Their active participation can lead to a more equitable and representative society.
